Cool site of the week - 3/16/09

Late again :)

Here's my cool site of the week for BlackBerry users - Tetherberry! http://www.tetherberry.com/.
A sweet BlackBerry app that let's your phone become a usb modem. Introductory pricing is $29.99 for the PC software (currently works on PC only) and the device app.

I purchased this software over the weekend and was able to tether my phone to my laptop and surf the web at really good speeds on my phone's Sprint Rev A network. From what I hear, the app uses your phone's data connection so you don't need to purchase any phone-as-modem service from your carrier. I had a similar app for my Windows Mobile phone (PDAnet).

Excellent app, works great at a very fair price.

Cool site of the week - 3/9/09

Have the last few weeks been rough on you too? The world is an even crazier place, people have officially lost their minds (IMHO) and the economy isn't in the toilet, it is the toilet. Despite all the crap, there's still time for a laugh.

Today's cool site of the week is Laughing Out Loud Funny. No, really, it is:

Have a laugh or two on me :)

Cool site of the week - 3/2/09

Happy Monday everyone! We're one step closer to spring! Ahhh...

Today's cool site of the week is a site for spinners. Nope, its not a site with a wealth of spinning info or forums or product reviews. Uh uh, this isn't that kind of site. This site, is about one of the greatest tools for spinners ever! Noooo, not the drum carder. This site is for the Woolee Winder! I know, there are people scratching their heads right now trying to figure out what the heck I'm talking about... but wait a sec, lemme tell ya.

If you're a spinner, you know that spinning involves stopping periodically to move the yarn from one hook to the next so that it spins onto the bobbin evenly. If you have hooks on your flyer (a part of the spinning wheel that spins and holds the hooks) you know that you sometimes end up with little "hills and valleys" as the yarn builds up beneath the hooks. If you have a sliding hook you can do a better job of preventing "hills and valleys" since you aren't limited to where you place the yarn. Your hook slides to any position so you can prevent or fill in any low areas on the bobbin. Even with the sliding hook set up you still have to stop spinning periodically to slide the hook. I don't know about you, but I get into a zone when I spin. I become so engrossed in spinning that its almost like mediatation. I can look up and have a full bobbin and not remember the time it took to fill it. I like that - the uninterrupted mediation of spinning. This is why I am so in love with the Woolee Winder! The Woolee Winder takes care of moving the yarn up and down the bobbin so that it winds on evenly. Its a patented invention that is available only through Nathan at http://www.thewooleewinder.com/.

Woolee winders are a flyer and bobbin set up that contains gears that mesh together and control the hook movement. When you spin on your wheel, the rotation turns the gears which then drive the hook up and down the flyer track. The result? A consistent, even bobbin of yarn without the start / stop involved in changing hooks. It may not seem very glam, but to see one in action or better yet, use one for yourself, is fiber-life changing! My Woolee Winder has made me a better spinner - I'm certain of it.

Cool site of the week - 2/23/09

Oops. Late again, dang! Sorry folks. Here's my pick for Cool Site Of The Week... its the new website launch of one of my favorite magazines, Spin Off. Its http://www.spinoffmagazine.com/

Their newly launched site is just chock-o-goodies! Sign up and enjoy the benefit of articles, free patterns and downloads, a great online community of spinners and lots more. I'm glad Spin Off finally launched their own site, outside of their horrible co-existence on their parent company's site (Interwewave Press). You don't have to subscribe to the magazine to belong to the site.

Cool site of the week - 2/16/09

Oops! I forgot to post a cool site of the week yesterday. Shame on me... I hope you haven't been waiting by the computer all night :)

Here it is, a little late but better than never:
The Joy of Handspinning.
Without a doubt, this site is the most informative and comprehensive site for handspinning online. Not only will you find information on everything from spinning wheels, spindles and fiber prep, but there are video tutorials! Even info on how to care for your Angora rabbits. Come on now folks, where else are you going to get all that information in one place??? The navigation is quick and easy so you'll find exactly what you're looking for. You can even do some shopping on if you're in the market for books, wheels, spindles, etc.

The Joy of Handspinning site is (IMHO) the single most important handspinning site there is, and therefore gets the cool site of the week award, hands down!

Cool site of the week - 2/1/09

Is it that time again already? Well, I am pushing things a bit, posting at 11PM, sorry to keep you all waiting. Today's Cool Site of the Week is not on topic, but it is timely. My daughter, a high school Jr. is preparing for college (man, how time flies) and got on the computer tonight to update her info on CollegeBoard.com. A great site for college bound students and their parents. Lots of information on how to find schools, prepare for SATs and more. Here's a quote from the site:

"Say "yes" to this free College Board service and you'll hear from colleges, universities, and government scholarship programs looking for students like you."

Please forward this college info to other college bound students and their parents. It'll make the process a little easier on everyone involved.

Cool Site of the Week - January 26th, 2009

Are you crafty? Do you tie dye, knit, sew, paint, sculpt? Whatever you do, you'll find great prices and fast shipping at Dharma Trading Co.! A favorite for spinners looking for Jacquard acid dyes. Dharma gets the Cool Site of the Week award for simply being a great site that caters to all kinds of crafts and makes crafting affordable again.

Cool Site of The Week 1/19/09

It's that time of the week again! Another cool site Monday :) Today's cool site is one of my all time favorites. A great site that allows you to take an image and convert into a graph pattern that you can use for knitting, crochet, rug hooking, you name it. I learned of this site when someone on Ravelry.com had created the likeness of Barack Obama in their knitting. When I inquired about it they offered up this very useful site http://www.microrevolt.org/knitPro/.

Enjoy!

Cool Site of the Week - January 5th, 2009

Ah, its a new year and hopefully a new YOU. Not that there's anything wrong with the old one, but sometimes its just a good idea to shed some skin. Its 8PM and I'm way late on posting the site of the week, but I haven't missed it - its still Monday :)

Tonight I'm cheating a bit and posting my pic for site of the week: Times Websites of the Year 2008! Hey, its a website! Enjoy.

Site of the week

Its Monday again and my memory is still pretty good. As promised, here's my site pic of the week:

Liberty's Yarns. What's so great about this site? Well, not only does she offer some amazing yarns in her Etsy shop, but her tutorials are fantastic, everything from "Drum Carder 101" to "How to make your own yogurt." I spent the better part of my morning taking in the wealth of information she's posted on her site. There are also patterns, project statuses and of course, blogging :)

I'm adding her blog to my blog list right now...

Site of the week

As long as I can remember to post, I'll be adding a Slick Site of the Week on my blog every Monday (hopefully). My latest find: IKEA Hacker http://ikeahacker.blogspot.com/ This is a very cool site that offers tips and tricks on how to repurpose your IKEA purchases, or how to make something even cooler our of an IKEA product (as if IKEA products could get any cooler).

I've got an IKEA not far from me and will be making a trip in the very near future.

Enjoy!
